check and balance this

Apparently, the majority party of the House of Representatives have decided that the Supreme Court Cannot Go There, as far as the Pledge of Allegiance goes.  Rep. Todd Akin (R-MO) is of the opinion that the "under God" portion of the Pledge is "the very heart of what America has always been about."  Which is funny, 'cause I thought that "getting away with it, sucka" was that heart thing.

Of course, I'm sure that I don't have to remind Rep. Akin (who's probably a swell guy and a scratch golfer) that the Framers were decidedly more Secular Humanist than they were Christian Conservative.  In fact, it's not unfair to say the Rep. Akin would remind Jefferson and Adams and their crew of some bug-eyed Church of England half-wit.

And everyone knows that "under God" wasn't added to the Pledge until 1954, so, even if "under God" is the Heart of America schma schma, then this Heart of America is 180 years less old than the actual country.  Which is a little late in life to be developing a heart, even for a young, freedom-lovin' nation like the US of A.

Also, everyone used to "Seig Heil" when they recited the Pledge, until Hitler came around, and then everyone was like, "Icky."

Of course, the bill will never pass the Senate, where reasonabilty occasionally extends to both sides of the aisle.  And ultimately, it's a dumb waste of time argument over the national equivalent of the State Flower.

But we can file it under "no level too low to stoop".
